Hi fellow netters, I sent this information to Peter and I think I will now send it to the group. If you leave e-mail messages or other information on your machines, ANYONE can send out replies to the messages without a password. In addition, if a person knows the pop and the smtp for any location/ISP/internet connection (like aol or your school), they can put these into any machine and send e-mail messages without a password. There is no way to require a password to send e-mail (only to pick it up). With the proper headers, this improper sending can be traced to the IP address of the machine that sent the message. Because of this, I stress two things to the teachers in the internet briefings: 1. Save your e-mail to a disk which you take with you. Do not leave it on the machine. 2. Keep a log record of who was on what computer at what time. If a student (or other person) sends abusive e-mail from that IP address, you can track down who was on that computer at that time. Obviously, this works best in a static IP environment. Where IPs are assigned by a network server, this could get tricky. You should talk to your computer guru for how to track that person. To see where your messages come from (if you are in Eudora), click on "blah blah blah." I have sent myself messages (from my school's e-mail to myself) and tracked it. I discovered this by accident and do not broadcast it to students. However, I do indicate to students that we can (and will) track down abusive e-mail messages traced to our school. Hope this helps. I tried to write this clearly. If you have any questions, I can answer some of them (some of them I may have to ask my connections to answer).
