Hello Group:

Some school districts have begun offering "bonuses" which are designed as
early retirement incentives. I know businesses do that in order to get
rid of the large salaries, but I was not aware that school districts
sometimes do that. Does yours? I am particularly interested in responses
from TExas.

Last year, my school offered a "one time" 12% of one's annual salary if
the person had worked a certain number of years (20? 25?) within this
district. "They" suggested that it may be offered again this year as well
as future years. Some reference to "federal requirement" was made (?).

In talking to people from other schools, I learned that one offered a
full year's salary as incentive. Another offers a package where a person
can go ahead and "retire" but continue to work for 3 years at $24,000
per year. (I *think* that's supposed to be an advantage, but I haven't
put pencil to paper to figure that one out.)

What does your school do? To make it easy for replies, I've listed
pertinent questions below:

To take advantage of a retirement/moving-on incentive:

1. Number of years in system

2. Amount of incentive

3. How incentive is invoked (letter of resignation or intention, etc.)

4. By when must decision be made

5. Is the option negotiated on a one-on-one basis or is there a
        "blanket" offer?

Thanks!

Betty
