Dear Everyone:
I was lost, but now I'm found!!!! :) One more day to go with my book fair,
email is back online, history and science fair are starting next week, not
to mention those "pesky" :) kids who like to read and can't check out until
Monday---and hey--I LOVE MY JOB! (The hit is coming, I just have to express
a little!) When I announced my new job, many of you wrote to tell me how
much I would enjoy it. I was excited and anxious, but I realize now ya'll
were completely right! I have the best job in the school! <big cheesy grin>
I'm trying not to let our little secret come out, but it sure is darn hard!
;)

BTW--My teacher was overwhelmed at the instant "wealth" I was able to give
her. Apparently she looked to little or no avail last year. I'm looking
good.... :) Thanks!

Okay--Hit time! A week (or was it two??) ago, I requested some author
information on Mary Downing Hahn. I have cut-pasted the responses below and
eliminated the doubles. Thanks to all who helped--(Yes Mother, I'm still
writing my thank-yous!) :)

----------------------
Besides Something About the Author and 7th Book of Junior Authors and the
web page mentioned on LM_NET, you'll also find a web page written by Mary
herself at the Washington, D.C. Children's Book Guild web site (seems like
it's now at CBBG.com, or is it org???).

You're probably aware that a sequel to Stepping on the Cracks had a sequel
come out (Following My Own Footsteps) but you may not know that there is a
third book coming out in the spring. It will be called As Ever, Gordy.
Mary is also working on a fourth book for the series. As they're based on
her own childhood she finds it hard to let go of the characters--and middle
school kids can't either.
------------------------
Sometimes <www.amazon.com> has author information.
------------------------
She is a MD author and very personable- a former public librarian in
Howard County. She is written up in SATA_ Something About the Author and
maybe the autobiography series by SATA, too.
------------------------
don't know whether or not you have found these sources or not, but M.
D. Hahn is in several volumes of Gale Research's Something about the
author, in Gale's Something about the author autobiography series, and in
H. W. Wilson's Sixth book of junior author & illustrators. I have also
found several periodical articles about her. She is in Sept. 1994 Book
Links; Feb. 1980, Jan. 1984, and April 1988 BCCB; Dec. 1983, May/June 1987,
and May/June 1990 Horn Book; Oct. 23, 1983 New York Times; Oct.1988 and
Dec, 1991 SLJ; August 1990 VOYA. She has won several state level book
awards in South Carolina and spoke at our South Carolina Association of
School Librarians' awards luncheon at our annual convention the year she
won.
------------------------
if you can gain access to Something About the Author, her biography is
in Vol. 81.
------------------------
For info on Mary Downing Hahn, have you tried the publisher? I have a
short blurb (mainly about her books) from Clarion in my files. Surely they
have more info available. She was the California Young Reader Medal winner
in 1991 for _December Stillness_.
The address on their blurb is: Clarion Books, 215 Park Avenue South, New
York, NY 10003. Good luck!
------------------------
We have a videotape in our collection called "A Visit with Mary Downing
Hahn" which was put out by Clarion.
------------------------
Mary Downing Hahn lives in Maryland (College Park, I think). She spoke to
my daughter's elementary school in Maryland about five years ago and was
such a good speaker. Very soft-spoken, but she kept the students'
attention the entire time. If I remember right, she used to be a teacher.
I think someone in the Baltimore County Public Schools' Division of Library
and Media Services (or whatever they are calling that office these days)
could help you locate her. Ask for Carolyn Mollenkamp (sp?) in the
Professional Library. Sorry I don't have the phone number; I now live in
Wisconsin and have misplaced most of my information with boxes in storage,
etc.

I am going to my school (high school) later today and will see if I can
find any other info in a book called Beacham's Guide to Young Adult
Literature.

----------------------------
the address of her publisher:
Clarion Books 215 Park Avenue South New York NY 10013
  (212) 420-5889
-------------------------------
My turn to help you. Information about this author is available (pages
129-132 if you are interlibrary loaning) in "Bookpeople: a Second Album"
(Libraries Unlimited/Teachers Idea Press, 1990) -- although the title is
not yet featured on their website at http://www.lu.com you can obtain
information about how to contact the publisher there and you can find out
more about the title by visiting the website at
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/5868/page_bkp.html

Once again--Thank you all! :)
