Thanks to all of you who sent ideas for 6th grade read alouds. My 6th grade teacher was delighted with the ideas. Here's the list: The Cay (and its sequel/prequel) Theodore Taylor A Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Newton Peck View from Saturday (loved by a 6th grade class last year) The Friendship by Mildred D. Taylor It is a story set in southern Mississippi during the depression. The book is short about 40 pages and is an excellent book dealing with friendship and race. Freak the Mighty Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco (excellent read aloud very suitable for 6th grad. Have kleenexes ready.) Daphne's Book by Hahn )the story of two girls assigned to work together on a school project - writing a book. One girl comes from a troubled background and is not well accepted, and the other doesn't want to work with her. It is a powerful story. The Faithful Friend by San Souci The Moves Make the Man by Bruce Brooks Make Lemonade by Virginia E. Wolff The Friends by Kazumi Yumoto Crazy Lady by J.Conley Heart of a Champion by ??? Marrying Malcolm Murgatroyd" by Mame Farrell?. It is about 6th graders. The two main characters are a boy and a girl whose families have been friends since day one. The girl, however, for several years has not wanted anyone to know that her family and she are associated with the boys family because the boy, Malcolm, is, and always has been, the class nerd. To complicate matters, the girl has a younger brother who has muscular dystrophy and the one person who really relates and is friends with him is Malcolm. It is a great book. The sixth grades classes even wrote the author and asked if she will be writing any other books - no prodding from me! the kids absolutely loved it. -- Jan -- Jan Ziglin, Library Media Specialist Pilgrim Park Middle School Elm Grove, WI janicez@execpc.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= To quit LM_NET (or set NOMAIL or DIGEST), Send an email message to: listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write either: 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET or 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST For more help see LM_NET On The Web: http://ericir.syr.edu/lm_net/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
