We will be setting up a (Novell) network in the library in the very near
future. I have been getting conflicting information regarding what
security software we need to install.
Our computer coordinator says that with Novell (oh yes, it's Netware 3.12),
you can handle all the security issues with just the network program, that
is, locking the students out of hard drives, dos, etc. Other people said
that you should have other programs, e.g., Foolproof or Fortress 101.

        So, who's right?

If we need additional software, what do you recommend?

In addition:

Let's say we are going to install a program on just one computer (for
example, Hyperstudio). Would we have to get extra security software for
that particular computer or could we still manage the security of that
computer through the file server?

Finally,

What about virus protection software?

(1) What do you recommend?
(2) Where do you install it, just on the server, or on each computer?

Thanks in advance for your advice/suggestions.

(I hate this part of the job!!! )

Subject: HIT: TECH: Printing your MAC computer screen

I got a wonderful response to my query on printing your computer screen in
Windows 95. For the people who enquired, and of course to anyone else who
wishes to know, to print a screen in Mac, you just press (simultaneously)
SHIFT and the apple keys and then while holding them down the "3" key. You
should hear a click (like a camera click).

Subject: TECH: Suggestions needed from Network literates!

I'm sure I'm not the only one out there in this situation...(or who once
was in this situation).

Someone has decided to put a network in your media center (or you've
inherited one). Choose one:
(a) You have no tech/computer coordinator on site
(b) You have a computer coordinator on site, but this person is overwhelmed
and never stops by your library

So, here you are, with little previous experience dealing with computers,
and not that much interest in getting a PhD in computers, either.

Questions:
How much do you have to know (or how little) to keep a network generally
running (I understand that the major problems will require someone else to
deal with it)

How did you, as a network literate, learn what you did?

What suggestions would you have for learning? (Books, online course,
continuing ed. class in... (what?).

I don't want to become a computer professional, but I don't want to be
totally frustrated all the time -- nor do I want to have to depend all the
time on the kindness of techie students.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

TIA
