ubject: NEA Today Article *What's Dottie's Secret?* rom owner-lm_net@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Tue Dec 16 20:34:16 1997 Date: Tue, 16 Dec 1997 20:33:29 -0500 Dear Friends, Did anyone else see the article called "What's Dottie's Secret?" in NEA Today, January 1998, p. 4-5? It lists seven "secrets' to a successful reading program. I read it eagerly to see how Dottie incorporates the library into her reading program, but the library is never mentioned. The article says each child has a basket of books on his/her desk that are at an appropriate reading level, and in bookcases around the room, there are hundreds of other books. No mention of a library. As I hunted for Dottie's email address so I could question her practices, I turned the page, where there is a big write up about the nationwide Read Across America Project on March 2. One of the questions in this article says "Why is NEA doing this?" The answer given is "Research shows that when children read outside of school, they do better inside school." Schools, libraries, and bookstores are being targeting by NEA to sponsor special events. Wonder what Dottie thinks about that? No email address is given. I thought it quite interesting. Comments, anyone? Karen DeFrank, Librarian Dorothy L. I found them on a web site. Today I spent every free moment looking at Christmas sites for riddles and came up with nothing. Any ideas for sites with Christmas riddles appropriate for first thru third graders? Or, better yet, do you know a Christmas riddle?? Thanks! Karen DeFrank, Librarian Dorothy L.
