When Supertyphoon Paka roared over, we huddled in the center of our house while 236+ mph winds tore around us. Window glass shuddered loudly in their frames. We could hear the houses around us being destroyed. We lost the washer, dryer and an air/con as well as1400of my books when the air/con cover got sucked out. Looking at the houses around us and knowing over 5000 people are totally homeless at this time of the year is very humbling... we were extremely lucky. But the resilience of these folks is amazing. On the morning after, we had to go out to check on a telephone-less, newcomer to Guam. There was a woman on the corner I wish I had taken a picture of. There she stood in the middle of the wreckage of her home, barbequing under a bright yellow tarp strung among four trees. Dead center stood her perfectly decorated Christmaa tree.... amazing! The power crews are working 24 hours a day. We got water back this morning and expect power to be back within three months...thank God for generators! Best to all who wrote to send us their prayers and wishes! Merriest and happiest to you all! Slainte!
