Dear LM_Net members,

Back in late November I posted the following call for input
on the worst web sites folks have used during in-services
on web site evaluation.

I received many requests for sharing results (about 9) and
a few suggestions on the worst web sites. Thanks to those
who sent their input. Here is my 11/23/97 posting and the results:

THE POSTING>>>>>
Dear LM_NET members,

I am seeking your input on the your suggestions for examples
of >>>poor<<<< educational web sites. If you have URL's that
you feel fail to meet appropriate standards of authority, effective design,
accuracy, content, etc. for K-12 students/educators please send
them to me!

I would like to use your examples in addition to several of
my own for a presentation on evaluating web sites.

I asked twice on this listserv for the same thing and got 1 response. If
you get any good ideas could you e'mail them to me? Here's acouple to get
you started.

my favorite is: altavista do a search for New Hartford, MN. It has all the
elements- good site. If you look in the atlas, there is no New Hartford,
MN. Someone went to alot of work to create this bogus site. Hope this
helps. Catherine

If you want to spend a bit of time evaluating it, you might try:

http://www.indonesiatoday.com/a1/a1_index.html

which I just put up in the Subject Catalog yesterday. This MAY be a
propaganda site (I warned of such in my note in the Catalog) put out by
the "forces of evil" in Indonesia, regarding child labor, subliving
wages, etc.

There's always the sites put out by hate groups, too, which you can
probably find with AltaVista by searching such terms as "American Nazi
Party," etc.

Here are some sources for bad websites and some bad websites as
well that I have collected for an Internet evaluation seminar:
http://www.worstoftheweb.com/
The Worst of the Web-- 3 bad websites daily
http://www.alexchiu.com/eternallife/index.html
Alex Chiu's amazing invention to allow eternal life
http://www.unlimited.net/~kumbach/velcro.html
        Velcro crop threatened in Calif.

Good luck!! It's also interesting to see what comes up when you type in
well-known addresses with the wrong extension such as whitehouse.com or
whitehouse.net instead of whitehouse.gov or nasa.com instead of nasa.gov.

Also worth demo-ing...

        www.whitehouse.com
        www.whitehouse.net
        www.whitehouse.gov

The final domain means the difference between porno sites
        and the legitimate Whitehouse site.
