Don't know how this joke would fly with the younger elementary school kids. Takes a little dramatic rendering to be successful. It should be told, not read. A student is sitting in the public library, studying. She looks up and sees a chicken come up to the main desk, say to the librarian, "(Three chicken sounds, a cross between 'buck' and 'book')" The librarian hands the chicken three books and the chicken leaves. The next afternoon the student has come back to study and also to see if the chicken appears. It does, comes up to the librarian, says " (repeat performance)" The student goes over to the librarian and says, why are you giving that chicken books? Chickens can't read! The librarian just smiles. The third day the student has given up on studying and is just waiting for the chicken. Same scene, chicken comes in, says "Buck, buck, buck" and the librarian again gives the chicken three books. The student is so curious, she follows the chicken out of the library. The chicken walks across the street and over to a pond, puts the books on the edge of the pond and opens each one, then sits down and waits. As the student watches, a small frog swims up to the bank, jumps up to look at each book, and says as he does, "Redit. Redit. Redit." -- Johanna Halbeisen Woodland Elementary School(K-4) Southwick, Mass jhalbei@k12.oit.umass.edu
