One thing the fifth-grade teachers at my school do, is that after each fifth-grader has research his/her explorer, s/he is to write a storybook based on that person, i.e., a historical fiction book like Ben and Me. (The teacher reads them Ben and Me.) The storybooks they make must be illustrated, and contain some fact and some fiction. When the books are finished, they are sent to the second-grade students to read. They've been doing this for years. Next year I'd like to help them find something to read the kids that's a little newer and better than Ben and Me, which is not one of my favorites, but I think the "making a book" idea is a good one, and it gets across the idea of what historical fiction is.
