Sorry for seeming redundant, but did everyone get this? I got a refused from the server message, so here goes again: I received several responses and edited them to make the list easier to read, I hope. I would like to thank all those who took the time to write with their responses and I hope they don't mind that I added their name to their responses. This LM NET listserv is the greatest resource a school librarian could have!! "Carey Bacon" <carey_bacon@smtpgate.blaine.wednet.edu>: Rolling Stone Seventeen YM Smithsonian National Geographic Sports Illustrated Atlantic Harpers Time Newsweek Science News US News. Potentially, I might order Scientific American, National Wildlife, People, Reader's Digest, The New Republic, and Nation. These are some of the staples. ------------------------------ Diane Freeman <dfreeman@jeffco.k12.co.us> Jefferson County Public Schools: Time USNews Newsweek National Geographic Popular Science Popular Mechanics Discover American Heritage Seventeen YM People Road & Track Car & Driver Motor Trend Transworld Skateboarding Transworld Snowboarding Sports Illustrated Rarely used: professional journals and anything not indexed As for numbers, we are a jr/sr high with 700 students and we have about 40 subscriptions as well as TOM full-text and NewsBank. ------------------------------------- Donna Carroll <dcarroll@buffnet.net>: I cancelled Mother Jones, despite the interesting articles, because of the offensive ads. I also censor Psychology Today's ads and if necessary, do not circulate the issue. ---------------------------------------- Linda Kelso Hicks <lhicks@crown.net> There's a list in a recent School Library Journal (I think) of what the kids like the most and dislike--and it's interesting how many titles appear on both lists! We have dropped our subscription to MS in the past year and I would like to drop Rolling Stone, although the kids love it. Our news magazines get heavy use as do the sports magazines SI, Tennis, Runner's World, Women's Sports). We also subscribe to Seventeen, GQ, Teen, YM. CQ Researcher, Congressional Digest are extensively used as well. --------------------------------------------- Lauren Deane Media Specialist Oak Lane Day School oaklane@pond.com: Definitely get some good current events magazines, Newsweek USnews and World Report Time come to mind. ---------------------------------------- Dana Pope popeda@heidelberg-emh2.army.mil I have been in HS for about 10 years. Every year I have taken fewer magazines! We depend almost 100% on cdroms for research. They are used MUCH more than the hardcopy magazines ever were. So, I wouldn't spend a cent on mags. until I had paid for SIRS and SuperTom or EMAS from Ebsco. Actually, by a fluke, we have all three of those magazine based products. Newsbank has a cheaper, less satisfying version of a magazine based database. And I would be sure I could network it. Then, and only then, would I start buying fun magazines for the kids to read. Don't ask us what they want: ask THEM. We take things like Sports Illustrated, YM, Football Digest, People, etc. because THEY like to read/browse them. I spend only about 10% of my budget on magazines, maybe less. (less than 1K for sure) Get the CD thing going, and don't ever look back. Use all that time you used to put in managing hardcopy mags into instructing for automated search skills! ------------------------------------------------ Sharon Hamer hamer@meol.mass.edu Hopkinton Middle/High School: I think the best magazines, other than the standard news and fashion and sports ones, are those that meet the needs of your school. Is your World language department very active? Do you have lots of craft clubs? Many titles have very little browsing value, but lots of research value. ----------------------------------- Liz Sargent Glenbard West High School Glen Ellyn, IL liz@kwom.com: My favorite magazine is Booklist. The reviews are very good and the articles are timely. ------------------------------------ Sue Covalla Chapel Hill NC scovall@ibm.net: The most popular: Electronic Gaming. Also popular: Seventeen YM YSB Hot Rod Sports Illustrated. For research: Time Newsweek Bombs we get but they never seem to move off the shelf: Readers Digest Vital Speeches. --------------------------------- Carolyn Gierke Sweet Home HS Sweet Home High School <hslib@moran.com> Sassy Magazine is great. ------------------------------- TBRUNNER@mail.centralia.k12.mo.us Centralia Public School District : My kids use: Time Newsweek Discover Scientific American Sports Illustrated Business Week Spanish Readers Digest Off Road 4 Wheeler Science News Western Horseman Teen Seventeen PC World Student Population 400 students --- I get only one copy each but would recommend several copies of Sports Illustrated if possible. ------------------------------------------------- Rosemary@forbin.com (Rosemary Zummak) : I am dropping Vogue and Redbook they are both highly favored by my high school BOYS because of their sexy pictures, perfume pullouts, and graphic how-to articles - the young women in my building don't pay much attention to them. I am going to keep all my Hot Rod, Four Wheel type things - and add a few more - they are popular and don't seem to disappear like the sport things do - another big bang for my library bucks is Sporting News - it has a newspaper-like format and comes out weekly. We get about 50 hard-copy subscriptions along with full-text from Ebsco - I wish there were more good things published for high school girls - they love Bride and Glamour ......Rosemary in Iowa (9-12, 540 students) Thanks for your responses and cooperation. ---------------- Ms. Sylvia Castro Fowler High School Library (209) 834-2564 sc122@ csufresno.edu
