I have a respect for the LM_NET as a balanced source of opinion and fact.
So I believe I must say the following regarding the Mac...

The Mac Operating system has evolved from serving Motorola 68000 series
processors to encompassing today's Power PC. At the time this evolution was
no more or less threatening to past or prospective owners as the phasing
out of Intel 486's to make way for Pentiums. At the time this growth
happened it was reported Apple would no longer make and support 68000 Macs.

Now that Apple has made an aquisition of the Next Operating System to speed
up the availability of the next Mac OS (which Apple admitted was behind
schedule) the same mixture of reporting and rumor is being seen.
Incidentally, for those wondering if this bodes well, Next is held in very
high esteem among the top corporate enterprise crowd. Which is to say that
in one fell swoop Apple has not only ensured a powerful, time-proven and
timely solution to their OS development schedule-- but has also ensured
solid acceptance among the Fortune 500 for some time to come.

Will there no longer be Macs made? If you believe some syntax-challenged
news sources it already happened a couple of years ago when Apple started
phasing in Power PC's.

When,as a joint effort with IBM and Motorola, Apple moves to a Common
Reference Hardware Platform to allow lower prices, the machines made by
Apple will still be Macs. They'll run a Mac OS. And that OS will run older
applications under emulation as the current PowerPC runs 68000 software.
Analysts agree Apple would not have been late with their new OS EXCEPT for
this corporate culture that demands maximum compatability and support be
extended to past customers.

Bottom line, yes Macs will continue to be made. In fact there are so many
big-name clone manufacturers competing for Apple's dollar that even if
Apple were to be done in by rumors the Mac will continue to be made and
improved.
