It drives me crazy the number of people who assume media people wind up in the job as a second hand one. I graduated from college in 1960 with a ba in teaching - major in Social Studies and minor in library as there was no undergrad major at SUNY Albany ( in fact it was not called SUNY ALBANY at that time). I have always been a library media specialist as it is the BEST job in the school. I think both media people and teachers should be insulted at the suggestion that worn out teachers would be the pool from which we are drawn! In the elementary school we have to have the computer skills as well as the teaching, storytelling, administrative, etc. We integrate the skills as needed. Our district does have computer TAs. Personally, I still need to be convinced that students at least in elementary school need to create web pages. Many times internet searching does not yield the information needed and too much time is lost in fruitless searching, tho I guess this is a lesson in itself. My bet is that in five years there will be a mixture of sources as there is now. Wherever the source is - you will still have to READ it, and ascertain its mvalidity for your purpose which is the bottom line Flit McElligott Rosendale Elementary Niskayuna NY fmce@aol.com
