In response to Maureen Simmons question, "Where do library media specialists come from?" I will add my two cents worth. In my case, I think I was destined to be a librarian. I tend to be a perfectionist and I think that the very nature of librarianship (cataloging, subject headings, ABC order, call numbers, everything in its proper place etc.) lends itself perfectly to this trait. I didn't start out to be a librarian, though. I have an undergraduate degree in English Literature and was on my way to becoming an English teacher. One day, while I was in a public library, some friends came in who needed help finding something. When I was able to locate what they were looking for, they said, "Hey, you're good at this! You should be a librarian!" Until then, that thought hadn't crossed my mind before. I don't know why not - since I was forever in one library or another doing research etc. The idea intrigued me enough to go for an MLS Degree and be certified as a school media specialist. I am glad I changed my career choice. But as I said before, I think it was destiny. You see, I was born in Vermont and the street I grew up on was Library Avenue!!!
