Last year, our first graders came once a week, set time, for both lesson and checkout. (our first year with flex.sched). In addition, we scheduled a second checkout time for when they came to the computer lab, which is in the library. This year I'd like to suggest to them to keep the scheduled lesson-checkout time and have two other set checkout times. Then next year, we may be able to checkout whenever the students want/need to. As far as with the other grades, it really depended on the teacher. If you would like more specific ideas of how the different teachers handled this change to open checkout, let me know. :) >Today we had a preplanning session at school and I mentioned some of the >advantages of flexible scheduling to some of the teachers, including that >students could come to the library every day to check out books if they >wished. The first grade teachers said that they would prefer scheduled >checkout because they require their students to put their books in a crate >after they are read to be turned in at the next scheduled library time. >They are afraid that some students would want to go to the library every >day just to get out of class. > >I don't mind doing a weekly scheduled checkout for the younger students, >but I feel that not letting them come to the library between times is >stifling their enthusiasm. Any comments? I feel that if a child checks >out a book and reads it the first day, that child has the right to come to >the library to check out another as needed. > >------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > Madeline L.
