Two things:1. I'M starting over in a new job librarianing two or three
(I STILLdon't know!) elem K-5's in Pittsfield MA. I spoke with
retiring lib. SHE described HER lib time as 20 minutes book selection,
then 20 minutes lesson. During her book selection time with the 3,4,5's
esp. she only let half the group look at a time so the 'uproar' was
kept down. While those kids look, the other ones do 'busy' work, ie
coloring, wordsearches, riddles etc. MY old lib time had 20 min lesson
THEN 20 min book selection. also, though I HATED the uproar the idea of
finding 'busy' work for all those grades all those months on TOP of
creating lessons sounds like too much to me. How do YOU organize your
time? HELP! Book or lesson first. Whole group or half? Busy work?
2. planning ahead heavily for the coming year and very excited
(scared?). For Nat lib week in April I'm doing a display of wild and
unusual libraries. I want to show these kids how exciting they can be.
I've been netting and scooping up wonderful sites from the American
Kennel Association Library, Baseball Hall of Fame Library
(unbelievable!), the Vatican library (from the LC show a few years
back), to Antique Auto libraries, Brooklyn Botanical Garden library etc
etc. Any additions from all of you? TIA Patty <3tunas@vgernet.net>
