Just to add to this discussion, one of my middle school colleagues had the
good fortune to work with a language arts teacher who was having the kids
do "book reviews" instead of the book reports.  The "reviews" were about a
paragraph long.  The librarian then put the "reviews" in a notebook with
the plastic covers for each page, and had a nice upright stand for the
"reviews." The kids would refer to the reviews when looking for a good
read.
