Good afternoon!

A 7th grader is doing her History Fair project on early space exploration
and found the following item:  KORABL
                               SPUTNIK

Well, Sputnik is familiar to us, but we can't find the other term anywhere.
Is it an acronym? an abbreviation?   a Russian term?  Any help would be
appreciated.
