Question: Keyboarding - when is it taught? Survey results: 7 responses 1. Oregon - Teach when it becomes useful which is earlier and earlier. K - 1 learn to use two hands, where home row keys are 2 - 3 learn to use the home row keys to get to the other keys efficiently 4 - 6 practice, practice, practice -- while using keyboarding as a skill 2. Pittsburgh Public Schools - 4th grade as 3rd grade fingers did not seem to spread enough. 3. 3rd grade using Almena. Kids really like it. 4. Virginia - 5th graders required to have keyboarding skills & other computer stuff. 5. Indiana - Keyboarding required as a high school subject. Thinking of moving it to 7th or 8th. 6. South Carolina K - expect them to use the home keys during all lessons. 7. 3rd grade - research shows students have hand stretch adequate to reach all keys and manual dexterity to be successful. Don't expect any speed. Do expect kids to use home row keys and touch type. Thank you. Darlene DeHudy Muskegon High School Learning Center ddehudy@remc4.k12.mi.us
