HIT: Sirs on the Web?!

Well I emailed the webmaster at SIRS about their site being open to
everyone for free and here is the final authoritative answer from Lynne
Ferrero
SIRS Webmaster/Online Development staff member listed below:

  Hi Chris, thank you for your interest. I have answered your
questions below and would appreciate if you could post the
response below on LM_NET, since there seems to be alot of
discussion about it.

  Also, if you could do a keyword search on Researcher on the
Web for "Chris Hart" we'd really appreciate that as well so
that we can determine if your IP address falls within the range
we created or one given to us incorrectly. Thanks again for
your assistance and interest in SIRS.

The SIRS Researcher on the Web site is provided
an annual license like our CD-ROM version.

There are two possibilities for the present situation:

1. We are currently implementing a new security measure.
In the transition process, some, not all IP addresses may fall
within a range that is being allowed access to SIRS Researcher
on the Web.  This is a temporary situation and will be resolved
shortly.

2. Or, we have been accidentally given an inaccurate IP address
range by a customer or previewer that extends past their
institution.  We are also checking for this.

  The IP addresses that fall within a range currently
able to freely access will need to pay the annual license fee
in order to continue their service once the new security measure
is in place.

  SIRS does offer free 60-day, no-obligation previews of the Web
databases.  Basically, those that have the access now need to
understand that it is only temporary, just like a preview.  We
hope they'll find the Researcher on the Web database useful
and will submit purchase orders so that they can continue
to access the database after the free access period ends.

  Pricing information for K-12 single site purchases can be
found at SIRS Web site (http://www.sirs.com). Contact
SIRS Customer Service Dept. at 1-800-232-7477
or e-mail custserve@sirs.com, for quotes for Public libraries,
district-, system-, or state-wide purchases.
