Earlier this month I asked:
which King books should I get?

What other authors other than Stine would you suggest for 6-8th graders
that like horror but that won't have parents beating down my doors.

Thanks to all the wonderful folks who answered! Here's my HIT.
=====================================================================
Diane Hoh hasn't caused a stir at my school YET.
Also try Mary Higgens Clark.
Velda McMorris <Vmcmorri@nkcsd.k12.mo.us>

I do believe that certain King books are better than others.
My favorite is Eyes of a Dragon (which is really a children's book)
others are The Dead Zone, Pet Cemetery, and Fire Starter.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Christopher Pike is another good author for young adult. Just make sure
you are purchasing his young adult novels. He has written a couple that
are for more mature readers.
_Dead Zone_
_Eyes of the Dragon_
_Salem's Lot_
Lynda Barbee Sullivan South High School <barbeel@ten-nash.ten.k12.tn.us>
---------------------------------------------------------------
H>W> Wilson's Senior High catalog, 14th editio, lists
Carrie
Dark Tower
Misery
The Shining
The Stand

I'd start with those.
I don't like horror, either. But our kids sure do. I accept a lot as
donations.

Three of King's books I would get are *Different Seasons* because it has
the story "The Body* which was made into the movie "Stand by me".
*The Stand* becasue it is a classic fight between good and evil.
And the *Firestarter* would be my third choice.
kgeronzin@po-1.northeast.k12.ia.us (Kathy Geronzin)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Margaret Mahy
lately, Paul Zindel (The Doom Stone, Loch Ness)
John Bellairs
Mary Downing Hahn
<blackmanl@nt-server.telstar.sad44.k12.me.us>
---------------------------------------------------------------
Best Books for Senior High Readers by Gillespie
suggests the following King books for schools: Bachman Books, Carrie,
Christine, and Cujo. I would also suggest the
authors William Sleator, Ruth Rendell, Thomas Tryon,
Shirley Jackson, and some chosen John Saul (Creature).
Linda Brake <lbrake@groupwise.egreen.wednet.edu>
---------------------------------------------------------------
Lois Duncan
Joan Lowery Nixon
Richie T. Cusick
Wolf Rider by Avi
BETSYinATL@aol.com
---------------------------------------------------------------
Just to see what would happen I ordered several of the regional ghost
stories from August House. They have been received really well by my
horror nuts.
---------------------------------------------------------------
A common problem. I buy King in paperback exclusively, cover them with
Kapco laminate (about $1 per book) and keep them behind the circulation
desk. A sign in the "K's directs people to ask for King at the desk.
Circulation has not declined but the losses have. I believe that
reading (almost) anything is a good thing, so I hope that you'll
continue to buy these books. I have had kids tell me that they never
thought that they could read such a long book, but having read a King,
they are willing to have me recommend another long book. Good luck,
Elisabeth E. Cook" <ecook@bcn.net>

---------------------------------------------------------------
The only King book I have had in my library (6-8) is Eye of the Dragon. It
really isn't horror, but more of an adventure/fantasy.
Glick <glick@iwaynet.net>
---------------------------------------------------------------
Some of your sixth grade horror fans might like books written by
Bellairs. He has a series in which the same characters outwit various
nefarious spooky beings. Seventh and eighth grade readers would probably
like some of Joan Lowery Nixon's horror books, Whisper from the Dead, for
example, as well as some titles by Lois Duncan.
Shirley Ellis <sellis@bminet.com>
---------------------------------------------------------------
I would definately purchase FIRESTARTER (king)
It is very frustrating when they disappear, isn't it!
Voni Rivas" <vrivas@scfc.cache.k12.ut.us
---------------------------------------------------------------
Misery, Delores Claiborne would be high on my list.
From: Jackie Norris <jnorris@linknet.kitsap.lib.wa.us>
---------------------------------------------------------------
INSOMNIA because it's the only one of his that made my cry at the end.
It's very different from his others.

SALEM'S LOT because I still remember, twenty years later, how scared it
made me. What a great feeling. <G>

Paul Zindel's newest books, LOCH and DOOM STONE, seem to be satisfying
the younger horror readers.

For the 6-8th graders, try Caroline Cooney and Lois Duncan.
