And more comments...

I am in the same situation you are. I have been running an elementary
school library for the past eleven years. I have two part time people
as aides. My beginning salary was $4.25 an hour. I now make $10.65 an hour.

My assistant gets @ $9.50/hr

I am the Information Resource Center Technician for Crete-Monee High
School. I started this postion as the library aide when there were three
of us working in the IRC: the IRC Director (librarian), A/V Specialist, and
the library aide (me). I started this position six years ago making $5.40
an hour. Two years ago the A/V Specialist retired and I made a proposal to
the administration that I would assume the responsiblitities of the A/V
Specialist if I would be given an increase in salary and hours. They were
not going to hire another A/V specialist so I would have been doing his
jobs any way. The gave me the position IRC Technician with an increase in
salary to $ 9.00
an hour and a 8 hour work day ( My original work day was 7 3/4 hours.) The
IRC has run smoothly for the past two years with the Director and I. Two
years I also started to work on my master's degree in library science.
This year the librarian is retiring I am the number one
candidate for the position.

Both postions the librarian and the A/V Specialist are full teachers
salaries. The librarian currently makes over $40,000 and I am at $10.60
and hour. We work as a team and basically perform the duties but she is
considered a certified staff member and I am considered support staff.

My library aide, who works with me full time and works with the kids as
well, is paid about $12,000 annually. The middle school aide, who
practically runs the library (although I am officially in charge), gets
paid about the same. The elementary aides, who really
run the libraries, doing storytelling, handling classes alone (which by law
theyr're not supposed to do--and some of them meet 25 classes/
week so the teachers can have their planning time) are paid about the same,
depend upon their years of experience.

I am a library aide who essentially runs the print and on-line research
portion of a middle/high school library for 500 students. My boss, the
Media director, runs media and technology for the school. He also meets
with administration on budget, etc. My salary for
10 months of school, 7:30-3:00, is $11,000.

I am the Professional Library Manager for the Bellevue School District in
Washington State. I have less than one year of college. I have been in
complete charge of the library for 12 years. We have over 12,000 books and
AV items, 130 journal subscriptions, and I also maintain the Public
Documents/Records/Archive. My circulation is more than our elementary
schools and I do all the research for teachers, librarians, administrators,
and members of the community. I select and purchase all of our materials
and I have a budget of $16,600 annually which is more than 95% of our
school's budgets.

I also provide technical support to 26 school librarians for our automated
circulation system and 3 different e-mail systems. Our library
has two PC's, 1 MAC, 2 online circulation terminals, and 1 Apple IIGS. We
have ERIC, Books in Print and many other CD-ROMS. Also, Internet access.

I work year-round, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. My salary is $12.23 an
hour or $25,536 annually. Our school librarians are making over
$45,000 for 9 months work, although many of them put in extra time for no
more pay. I have 17 days of vacation, 13 holidays and 12 days of sick
leave. Also, medical and dental.

All but one of our school libraries are staffed by at least a part-time
librarian, most are full time. The middle schools and the high schools
have a Library Specialist that earn between $9.64 to $10.88 an hour.

We have three library managers, elem, ms, hs. The high school librarian
does have a MLS. The other library manager and I just have
experience in school libraries. We are classified employees and have the
highest salary in the district due to responsibilites, mainly budgetary. We
all work alone with the site principal as our supervisor.
        Our salary range is 11.35 - 14.21/hr.
        We used to have a library clerk(me!), 7.79 - 9.25/hr

I am a Library Specialist (just of one of the names that our jobs go by).
I work in a large high school....2400 students, grades 10-12. I have a
co-worker and we work under the direction of one librarian. Sandy and I do
just about everything the librarian does except budgets and cataloging.
Our salary range is about $9.00 to $11.00. We work a 193 day contract
andhave sick leave, vacation and holidays paid...though you aren't really
allowed to have vacation days while students are in session. We are the
only library specialists in our entire district so have a sort of unique
position.

At one time the classified positions in the district were re-classified and
the ls were placed at the same level of play ground attendent.....a hue and
cry went up and they allowed the ls position to be moved up one
grade......this is the lowest clerical position in the district. Right now
we are attempting to raise the position at least one more level but it
seems to be taking a very long time for this to transpire.

While we are "suppose" to have a certificated teacher available in the
library while it is open, it doesen't really happen that way. Our hours
are 6:45 to 3:15 each day. Sometimes we help teach classes in materials to
entire classes of students. We are responsible for not only the clerical
work but also assist students in research, computers, manage the volunteers,
manage the student assistants and reading material. I also manage indexes
to periodical material that we subscribe to but isn't indexed otherwise.
Many times a substitute for the librarian cannot be found when she is ill
and so we manage the library during her abscence.

I'm in a similar position to yours. We are a 6-12 grade school of the Arts
of 525 students. My title as "Media Clerk" does not begin to cover all of
the responsibilities of my position running the library at our school.
There is no librarian or "media specialist" as they are called in our
district. I make up the entire library staff. I do not work under the
supervision of a media specialist, although I can contact media specialists
at other schools in the district when I have a problem or a question. They
have been very
supportive when I have done so in the past. My 9 years of experience as a
part-time library technician at a local community college has been helpful.

I am a 10-month employee and earn $19,062 per year. Of the Clerk/Secretary
salary schedule in our district, a "media clerk" is considered the lowest
rung on the ladder, therefore I make less than the school secretary.

Again, thanks to everyone who took the time to respond.
