New executive director named for AASL and YALSA

        Julie A. Walker will become the executive director of the
American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Young
Adults Library Services Association (YALSA), divisions of the American
Library Association (ALA), effective June 1.
        Walker currently is director of Library & Media Services at Round
Rock Independent School District in Texas,  which has a 26,000-student
body served by 34 professional librarians on 31 campuses.  Before
becoming director in 1992, she was a school library media specialist with
the district for four years.
        Walker's previous positions include school library media specialist
in the Hays Consolidated Independent School District in Buda, Texas;
district librarian in the Schulenburg (Texas) Independent School District;
and high school teacher in the Schulenburg district.
        Walker has been a lecturer at the University of Texas Graduate
School of Library & Information Science at Austin.
        Her article *Managing Change in the School Library -- Paddling
Through White Water* was published in MultiMedia Schools'
March/April, 1996 issue.
        She has been active in AASL/ALA, Beta Phi Mu and the Texas
Library Association.
        Walker has a bachelor's degree in education from Southeastern
Oklahoma State University and a master's degree in library and
information science from the University of Texas at Austin.
