Marjorie: I am not sure what the original discussion was on this issue
but from your reply I am glad you have asked this question. However,
from my experience
teaching students is the second phase of the information literacy
process. The first phase and I feel the most important is teaching our
teachers about this information literacy process. Helping teachers
design lessons that truly get to the important aspects of a students
learning has to be in place before the students begin their quests. How
many times have we as media specialists seen assignments that do not move
the learner along the path that would lead to "independent information
seekers and knowledge constructors." The BIG SIX strategy, I SEARCH
strategy, the Jamie McKinsey questioning approach are all excellent
models and if we as media specialists can help our teachers move in this
direction, we will then be helping our students become better evaluators.
