For those of you who haven't seen them yet, the Information Power revision draft and the new Information Literacy Standards are posted on the Web. http://www.ala.org/aasl/lp_elements.gif http://www.ala.org/aasl/externaldraft8.html (philosophy and roles) http://www.ala.org/aasl/ip_draft.html (outline of the book) http://www.ala.org/aasl/stndsdrft5.html (new Information Literacy Standards) What I need is your reaction! Think about it! Tell me what you think. Does it matter to you that one of our roles has changed names? Instructional consultant to instructional partner (to me it is less overbearing and more pleasant to work with a "partner") Do you think the information literacy standards will help you do your job? (it sure gives me a better focus) What do you think it will take before we can get others in education, not just library media specialists, to buy in and see us for what our potential could be? Are you willing to take the information out to at least one university and help explain it to future teachers and future administrators and even educate those in your own building(s)? If we all did it, don't you think there might be SOME change for the better. Instead of always saying, "AASL should do a better job," I agree with Marjorie Pappas, Mike Eisenberg, and Gary Hartzell (April 1996 archives), WE are the ones who have to do it, every single one of us who takes pride in our jobs. If we all take care of a little bit of the education, don't you think it would start to add up? Anyway, I just would like to hear reactions to the revisions and new standards. I am writing my comps and in my first year as a library media specialist. I have a friend who is in the middle of comps and classes right now, too, and Friday she will be addressing education methods students at a nearby university about how to work with the LMS and what the library has to offer. She has done it at one other university near us this year, too. She is just as busy as everyone else and yet she is willing to do what she knows is important. I can't say I've done that much, but I have contacted one university and offered to do the same for them. I know there are many more of you out there doing this. But we need more! I seem to be ranting. Before I start raving too, I'll just say thank you in advance for looking at the new info and letting me know what you think.
