I wanted to share this with the group. EBS has really turned on our resource reading class (4th and 5th graders reading several grades below age level). One fifth grader has lead the school since the year began. He now has 50 points on the program. The best part is that he sets weekly goals for himself, "I am going to get 3 points this week." He is not almost obsessed with continuing to lead the entire school in points. The closest score is someone in the low 30s. His success has turned in to an impetus to the rest of the resources class. The teacher just left the library after telling me that she has to *make* them stop reading to work on math or other areas! Today the class asked if she would give them extra time to read! After Michael's initial success the rest of the class was NOT motivated, but with his continued success and recognition, they have all taken the challenge. For recognition this year, outside the library doors I have EBS "shelves" 10-20-30-40-50 points. The student's photo is posted on the shelf with the correct score level. This has added to the success of the program. Other 5th grades are now trying to best Michael "If Michael can do this, *I* can do it." It is somewhat amusing to watch the sudden interest in nonachievers. Another great feature - at first NONE of the students would retest if they missed passing a test. Now they will reread. Michael took home a book that we felt was probably beyond his ability level. He struggled, failed the test twice. On Friday he told the teacher that he would not retest because he was going to reread over the weekend and study to pass. He and his mother worked on comprehension and on Monday he passed the test! Michael's ability to handle frustration hs increased with this program.
