Thanks to everyone who emailed me with suggestions about "fractured fairy
tales" in which Cinderella was bad and the stepsisters were good. I am so
impressed with all the people who take the time to help someone else. I've
pasted in the responses. Unfortunately we didn't have the best-sounding
book, but I passed the email on to the teacher, and she found it in the
public library.
Like I always say, LM_NET is fantastic!

Russell Shorto has a book called "Cinderella and Cinderella's Stepsister"
which tells the tale from two points of view.

Sylvia,
I have bought Cinder-Elly by Frances Minters, illustrated by G. Brian
Karas. It tells the story of Cinderella in a poem/rap format and takes
place in New York City during modern times. Cinderella meets her prince
charming at a basketball game, and she looses her sneaker.
I have read this to some of my students and it gets checked out quite a
lot. Although it is a take on the Cinderella story and not an actual change
in the storyline, I think it is quite good!

Hi Sylvia!
Could you be looking for "Cinderella's Stepsister, and, Cinderella: the
Untold Story, as told by Russell Shorto, illustrated by T. Lewis. Carol
Pub. Group, 1990. (A standard version back-to-back with a version by the
"evil" stepsister)". This is mentioned on the website Cinderella
Stories at http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~dkbrown/cinderella.html

Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes has a fractured version of
Cinderella. If you enjoy Roald Dahl's sense of the outrageous,
this book is a good one.

Sylvia;

The recent picture book, Fanny's Dream, is also a somewhat "fractured"
Cinderella, although sweetly so.

Hello,
There is a version of Cinderella in A TELLER OF TALES by William Brooke
which has a twist that would appeal to intermediate students and there's a
wicked verse version in Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes. Joan

There are two great little books by Babette Cole:
Prince Cinders. London Collins 1989 - 0006629644
and
Princess Smartypants
London, Penguin, 1996 0140555269
They are alternative versions of fairy tales, perhaps not quite what
you're seeking, but if you haven't seen them, worth a look

Dear Sylvia,

There's a wonderful takeoff of the Cinderella story in a poem by Roald
Dahl entitled Cinderella. It is in Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes.

It begins:

I guess you think you know this story.
You don't. The real one's much more gory.
The phoney one, the one you know,
Was cooked up years and years ago,
And made to sound all soft and sappy
Just to keep the children happy.

(and continues on for several more pages.)

Hope this helps,

Sylvia,

I just got around to the School Library Journal for October, where there was
an article on fractured fairy tales. I'm sure Cinderella was mentioned as
the most frequently fractured tale. And I think there were titles of good ones.

Sylvia-
I think I have also seen the book you're talking about. I used to
work in the children's dept. in Barnes & Noble and I think it was called
The Upside Down Cinderella or something like that. It was set up so you
could read the traditional story on one side of the book then you turned it
over and it had the fractured version coming from the other side. They also
had a version of Red Riding Hood like that too from the same publisher.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the author or the publisher. I saw it the
last time about 2 yrs. ago so I don't even know if it's still available. I
would check with a bookstore and see if they can find it in Books in Print
for you. I hope this is of help.
        Take care.

Sylvia,

I just found this website on Cinderella stories that you might want to
check out:
          http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~dkbrown/cinderella.html
It seems to be very comprehensive. There is a bibliography of Cinderella
stories that you might find helpful.

_Cinder Elly_ is not the one that you are looking for, but it's another
modern-day, crazy version of Cinderella.

Sylvia, I think I have what you want. It is one of those point of view
stories where one side is the traditional version and the other side is
from the perspective of the step-sisters. It is called: Cinderella: the
untold story by Russell Shorto. 1990. $13.95. Carol Publishing Group, 600
Madison Ave,NY 10022. You should be able to get it in any decent
children's book store. There are other fairy tales available too.
