Okay...I have the solution! This would work from Middle School down, but
I'm not sure about high school. I don't get enough whole classes in at a
time for browsing to do it. When high schoolers come as a class, it's
for a research purpose.

My solution (and I'm sure many of you have already done this): Make
shelf markers out of posterboard. Let each student put his/her name on
one or several. Then....each student takes a book (or two or three,
depending on the number needing to be shelved), and he/she shelves the
books, leaving the marker so you can check it. You may have to some how
to change a few, but by the time you've checked each one, you have your
books shelved and your lesson taught! Of course, knowing kids, the first
few times this will be a novelty, but it will grow old if it is
routinely done.
