portrait of our times

I had a senior come to me today who is applying to enter the honors
program at a nearby university.  She need to read and write a 250 word
essay about a book that in her opinion depicts a portrait of our times.
My guess is that she wants a title similar to what the Great Gatsby or
Babbitt was to the twenties.  I've come up with one YA book "Nothing but
the truth" by Avi, but there must be something better.  Any suggestions
would be a great help.  Please respond to the email address below.  TIA
