Several weeks ago we had a strand about the students checking their own
books out. I have begun to do this wih my 5th graders and it seems to be
working just fine. One of us (my clerical assistant or myself) is
usually still close by to keep an eye on it, making sure the kids check
the monitor to see that they are checking the book out to themselves, so
they are not totally independent---yet! Of course, there are always
renewals limits, 'found' books on the shelves, etc., which make for
exceptions toa clean checkout and one of the reasons we do keep close.

One of the things I have always noticed from about 1st grade on is the
kids KNOW where their barcode is in the book! We use plastic pages that
hold the barcodes by class, and the kids can point to theirs, upside
down, even from 1st grade! It actually speeds things up when they can do
this!

On the other hand...the past week has had it troubles....3 mice have
disappeared from the new PowerMac lab (not just the balls...the whole
mouse...tail and all!!) and then today, we caught 2 5th grade boys
putting a packet of stickers that I use with the primary kids into a
library book. My clerical, who witnessed the whole thing, said I should
have seen the look on their faces when they realized they had been
caught! I told her she needed to see the look on my face when I chewed
them out! It seems like a game to them...but one boy, taller than I,
crouched down, appearing be dealing with a shoe (but never taking his
eyes off of me) had tears in his eyes .... do you think they will ever
learn....???
