Even if you are automated, you still have to scan the books, put the books in shelf order, and track down any missing books. Last year I was given an extended year contract that included five days. This year I requested and justified and received 10 extra days. Five at the beginning of school to process new books and get the center in circulating order. Five at the end to requistion new materials and supplies for the coming year, do complete back ups of my equipment, check and clean returned equipment (mainly overheads that are checked out for the year) and remove videos that have copyright dates that expire at the end of the school year or during the summer months. Like all media specialist everywhere, I still work more days than I am paid. If your system balks at paying you extra, maybe you could work out a deal where you receive extra "comp" days. A media specialist in this area gets "comp" days during the school year instead of extra pay. That way the system doesn't have to come up with any extra money. She says this works well for her. What automation system do you use? How does your administer expect you to do an accurate inventory with books going in and out all the time? How will you keep up with the ones that have been scanned and the ones that have not? Our center houses roughly 20,000 volumes, it takes myself, two assistants, and two student aides working none stop about three days to scan the shelves. Then you have to print out the reports and hunt misshelved books and missing ones. Your administrator needs to re-evaluate his/her postition. Sounds as though he/she thinks you are superwoman. I would certainly point out the fact that I am not. If I can be of further assistance, email me directly. -- Sonji K.
