Proposed Media Program Cuts

At our School Board meeting this past Monday night, our new
superintendent presented to the board a budget-reduction program calling
for $2.4 million in cuts in 1998.  Without the cuts, she says the
district will run out of money sometime in the 98-99 school year.  Guess
where the biggest cuts are?? The library media program, of course.  Her
plan calls for the elimination of 10 (out of 20) elementary media
specialists, replacing the central cataloger with a clerk, and
eliminating 4 out of 5 of the secretaries at the IMC (Instructional
Materials Center).  Of course we are not taking this lying down!  Many
of us have sent letters and info to the 7 board members and the super.
We (all Media specialists) plan to meet this Monday (Dec. 1) after
school to work on further strategies.  The Board will vote on the
proposed cuts on Monday, Dec. 8.  If you have any thoughts, suggestions,
ideas on what we can say, send, present to the board members that will
hopefully convince them to vote it down, we would appreciate it.  Please

tough for me to feel very thankful today, but I am very, very thankful
for this group!  I know you will help us in any way you can!  Have a
