I am in my third year as K-12 Librarian/7th Grade Girls English/ High School Computer-Video Technology teacher (someone has to do it!). The library has the main collection on wall bookshelves and the kindergarten and juvenile collection on semi-mobile shelves (takes two people to move them) all in the same room. Once or twice a month the superintendent will pass on a parental complaint about an elementary student checking out an age inappropriate book he/she has gotten from the main shelves instead of the "J" or "E" shelves. I try to steer the students to "their" areas, but a handful insist on checking out other books they have found which might be considered high school level. If I am aware they are checking out such a book I will try to suggest a more appropriate book but such a suggestion seems to make the book they have chosen even more desirable. I am reluctant to pull the book from the student's hands and say no, you may not check it out. At least they are reading something. If I ask them to try to read a sample page, they claim their mom or dad will read it to them. Any suggestions for strategies to answer my superintendentıs complaints would be appreciated.
