Our elementary (K-4) is using the STAR module of the Accelerated Reading program. Several of our teachers went to a seminar and it was recommended that "reading level" labels be placed on the books. I have mixed feelings about labeling and would like to know how it is working in schools where the labels have been used. Where in/on the book have you placed the labels? Do students compare or comment on the reading level of their book - bragging to others that they are reading harder materials? How do you deal with this or isn't it a problem? How do you get students to read books that aren't on the AR list and haven't had tests made for them yet? I've got a lot of good books in my collection that aren't being read because they "aren't on the list." We are having parent volunteers and teachers write tests, but we're not keeping up with the many titles that students would like to read but return to the shelf when they don't see the AR label on the book. As you can tell, I need help! Any suggestions from veteran AR users would be appreciated. Thanks.
