Thank you to those who shared the following ideas: The Wall by Eve Bunting is available as a picture book and a Reading Rainbow video. The video features Maya Lin-the wall architect and info on construction of Mount Rushmore too. A couple of ideas to go along with The Wall are to make wall rubbings or to send home with students certificates asking for names, dates, locations, etc. of family members who are veterans. The students return the certificates to school and they are shared outside of classrooms or in a wall display. Linda Granfield's In Flanders Fields: The story of the poem by John McCrae, could be used to do a choral reading and then have students individually tell some of the background information about WWI presented there. They could also write out the poem and make poppy posters. For older kids, Michael Foreman's picture book War Game, portrays life in the trenches during WWI, and a Christmas hiatus in the fighting where the opposing sides played a rousing soccer game together.
