I have had several requests to post a hit on my query regarding = search techniques/search engines that avoid commercial websites. = Here is what I=B9ve accumulated so far. Thanks to those who = responded so quickly -- I was astonished! Jane Behrens English/Future Librarian Hudson High School -- Hudson, Iowa jbehrens@hudson.k12.ia.us * * * * * Several of the search engines utilize Boolean search terms. You could then put in your search term following by NOT .com, which would = exclude all sites from the .com realm. Unfortunately, that would also exclude sites that individuals put up using a commercial server that might = meet your needs, but you would get all the sites with .edu, .org, and .gov suffixes, which often are the best ones anyway. Hope this helps! :-) Marti Anderson mailto:marti@inwave.com http://www.widesmiles.org/useful/ substitute teacher, Janesville, Wisconsin Public Schools seeker of a position as an elementary school library media specialist * * * * * Users need to read the "help" pages with each search engine to use it effectively. For example, in AltaVista, you should be putting OK = Corral in quotes to indicate a phrase and once you get the commercial sites = use the minus sign in front of a keyword like tour or vacation or ranch to exclude all sites with those words in them. Teaching search = strategies is one of my primary functions. -- Diane Freeman, Library Information Specialist Arvada West High School phone (303) 982-1287 11325 Allendale Drive fax (303) 982-1305 Arvada, CO 80004 email dfreeman@jeffco.k12.co.us * * * * * you have an opportunity here for both a library lesson in internet searching and a workshop for teachers and, as a bonus, a justification for professionals in the library. for the heck of it i searched using altavista- here are the exact formulations and results: ok corral 33430 "ok corral" 559 +"ok corral" +history 175 +"ok corral" +history +gunfight 60 this could possibly be narrowed down more, but on the first screen on the last search was a link to a yahoo list which is probably what you want. ed -- Edward W.
