I have had several requests to post a hit on my query regarding =
search techniques/search engines that avoid commercial websites. =
Here is what I=B9ve accumulated so far. Thanks to those who =
responded so quickly -- I was astonished!

Several of the search engines utilize Boolean search terms. You could
then put in your search term following by NOT .com, which would =
exclude
all sites from the .com realm. Unfortunately, that would also exclude
sites that individuals put up using a commercial server that might =
meet
your needs, but you would get all the sites with .edu, .org, and .gov
suffixes, which often are the best ones anyway. Hope this helps!

Users need to read the "help" pages with each search engine to use it
effectively. For example, in AltaVista, you should be putting OK =
Corral
in quotes to indicate a phrase and once you get the commercial sites =
use
the minus sign in front of a keyword like tour or vacation or ranch to
exclude all sites with those words in them. Teaching search =
strategies
is one of my primary functions.

you have an opportunity here for both a library lesson in internet
searching and a workshop for teachers and, as a bonus, a justification
for professionals in the library.

for the heck of it i searched using altavista- here are the exact
formulations and results:

ok
corral
33430
"ok
corral"
559
+"ok corral"
+history
175
+"ok corral" +history
+gunfight 60

this could possibly be narrowed down more, but on the first screen on
the last search was a link to a yahoo list which is probably what you
want.
