ubject: HIT:Elem/Mid working with Art teacher part 2

Our art teacher has done (7-12 grade level) endangered species units
where kids paint/draw/create their animals and add info about them to the
 presentation.

She does a public art unit and at least one of the pieces is hung in the
library. I have an abstract painting of books/people and a sculpture
that looks like a purple sun that is called "Dark Shine."

She uses books from the library when she puts up displays of student work.

She has done a cultural unit similar to the endangered species unit where
she combines research/information with an art presentation. Good luck. Pat

Ways we have worked with art gr. 7-8

Artists' reports - classes came in searched for bio info and copies of
work by artist - student put together booklet about artist and did an art
piece in style of their artist.
Searched books and internet for quotes for calligraphy unit With Language Art
class students write picture books and illustrate them. (taht was a while ago
for us)

One project that we do at my school, invovles all the special teachers.

In the library we study folklore from around the world. The students each
get a passport with the continents listed, on per page. As they read
stories from different parts of the world, their passport is stamped. I
use a set of continent stamps, each having its one color. The students
also list the stories they have read on the page.

In music they study different types of folk music and dance. They students
learn simple rythmes and beats.

In art they study folk art and drawings.

In PE they "play" (the PE people would kill me for using that term) games
and activities from around the world.

All the students seem to enjoy it, and it gives us a chance to work
 together.

In the past, the art teacher and I have collaberated with first grade
lessons about Eric Carle. I read the books, and show the video "Eric
Carle: Picture Writer". In the video, he shows how he creates the
illustrations for his books. The art teacher takes over and has the
students create their own papers, as he does, and then use them to make a
picture. She has the video playing in the background while they work. It
has been successful for us.

At Town Creek Elementary in Lexington Park, MD, the art teacher and I are
doing a bulletin board in the lobby for student of the month. The art
teacher designs the board and I had the 3rd 4th and 5th grade students
photograph the students of the month. We are a small school of 250 and
everybody will be a student of the month by the end of the year.

Tiling, a la M C Escher, comes to mind--with culture, history, art, math
tie-ins.

Our fifth grade students select a yucky book (but still a good book inside)
 - it is one with a boring - ugly - plain cover. The students borrow it &
then in art class they design a new cover. They work on printing, design,
color, etc. We laminate the covers when done (0n the back they have a 2-3
sentence paragraph about themselves) We've been doing this together for
several years and my collection is really sprucing up! The books are on
display during the Arts Festival at the end of the year & parents enjoy
seeing them.

I have a wonderful art teacher that works well with me also. We use paint
stir sticks as shelf markers. She and the students painted them and then
incorporated an inspirational message on each one. Really neat! She has
also done some of our acquarium wall paintings in the media center itself. I
am always asking her to help with something.
