I was going to let this one pass by but after the posting Graham Small tried to put over on us this morning <g> I decided to investigate the origin of this simile. According to the book, *Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins, 2nd ed.* by William and Mary Morris (Harper & Row, 1971) the saying is "Happy as a clam at high tide". Seems clams can only be harvested at low tide. Wouldn't you be happy to? >I always heard it was "Happy as a clam at high tide." -- Sally Lantz mailto:sarahl@ccpl.carr.lib.md.us Media Specialist West Frederick Middle School Frederick, MD 21701 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= To quit LM_NET (or set NOMAIL or DIGEST), Send an email message to listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write EITHER: 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST * NOTE: Please allow time for confirmation from Listserv.
