FSeveral of you asked that I create a hit regarding any weeding
policies I received. Here they are.

Laura Pearle (Professional Children's School) sent:
Weeding Policy
In order to maintain the quality of the collection, obsolete and
unused materials are removed from the working collection on a
continual basis. The advice of individual faculty, academic
departments or other uniquely qualified individuals is sought when
appropriate. No materials will be discarded only because they contan
controversial or umpopular opinions. The final decisions rest with
the Librarian in consultation with the Head.

Infrequently used materials are retained if they contribute to the
excellence of the collection as a whole and are cited in at least one
subject bibliography. As a general guideline, last copies of
out-of-print books are retained if they add value when viewed in the
perspective of the total collection.

The process of weeding the collection involves time, skill in
collection development, expertise in collection maintenance and a
thorough knowledge of resources and their potential reference or
research value for Library users.

Resources permanently withdrawn from the circulating collection are
destroyed, given away, or sold. Resources removed from the reference
collection because of the addition of a new edition may be transferred
to the circulating collection or to a classroom.

Criteria for Weeding the Collection
Obsolescence (particularly in science, technology,mathematics,and
the social sciences)
Physical condition
Number of copies
Coverage of the subject by other materials in the collection
Value to the total collection
Insufficient use (never the sole governing factor)

Jane DeNeve (W.Dubuque HS) sent:
(this is part of the district Instructional Materials policy)
III Weeding of Instructional Materials
It shall be the policy of the district to provide for the regular
weeding of instructional materials no longer of value to the
library/media program or the instructional program. Criteria to be
used in the weeding process shall include 1)poor physical condition;
2)obsolete, inaccurate or superceded content; and 3)unneeded
duplicates.

The library media specialist may remove from the library
media center materials judged to be no longer of value to the
educational program. This weeding is a continuing task pursued
throughout the school year each year as time permits. Weeding
guidelines from the American Association of School Librarians and the
Iowa Department of Education will be used as a reference in
establishing priorities regarding the materials to be weeded.

The curriculum committee may remove text materials no longer of value
to the instructional program following the criteria listed above.

Materials that are weeded shall be discarded unless it is determined
they have worth to other groups or individuals within the school or
general public in the district.

Thanks to both these LMSs for responding. Hope this helpful to all
who asked to be included.
