Throughout the day I have been reading postings from people complaining
about a Pornographic bulk e-mailing received by the users of the LM_NET
Listserv, including the Moderators, and as an Internet user with several
years of experience, I found it amusing. When I read that the senders' e-mail
account had been closed, I knew the strand had taken a turn to self
rightiousness that perhaps is a bit premature. I have been following this
strand with a small bit of amusement for 2 reasons:

1. I deleted BOTH(yes, I got 2 from 2 different addresses) of the original
postings without ever having realized that they came through the listserv. I
have received this particular bit of SPAM perhaps 6-7 times already. I get
SPAM almost daily, and I treat it just as I do junk mail I receive at home, I
toss it unopened. It was only when I started seeing responses that I realized
it had come through LM_NET.
2. We also have a strand running at the same time about blocking unwanted e-
mails.
AOL(my ISP) claims to have a very good record with blocking Spammers, yet I
routinely get SPAM. Their excuse is that every time they block one means of
access, the Spammers find another. We have a "private" list, yet the Spammers
managed to get in anyhow. Yes, we need to protect ourselves against unwanted
mail by writing to the ISP it originated from, but that will become possible
less and less as more and more companies producing bulk e-mails use services
like the Anonymizer(http://www.anonymizer.com) to hide their origins. I
realize that unwanted mail has a bad effect systemwide, but face it, if the
Spammers did not make money from it, they would close shop. The Postal System
has tried for years to stop junk mail without success, somehow it seems only
natural that Junk mail moves from paper to e-mail just as we did.
Sorry guys, SPAM is annoying but I firmly believe it is here to stay. I
don't get outraged, I merely delete it and accept it as a fact of life. As for
the Spammer's account being closed, they will no doubt be open for business
again using another name by the week's end. If it takes that long. As I said,
I received 2 copies from different "names", and have received it several times
before today, so no doubt the closing of one account is just a minor glitch on
their way to prosperity.
