Nancy...
I certainly am not going to flame you, but appreciate you for your
professional comments. I happen to love reading (a lot!) and I recall
when I was in a middle school library I read a book a night (almost,
sometimes not too thoroughly) so I could talk with those kids about
books --that age reads a lot and almost everything. ANYWAY, now that I
am at the h.s. level (15 years), my 'reading advisory role' is fifth or
sixth in the list of major things I do...I spend a lot more time as a
manager of information, curriculum consultant, teacher of lifelong
reference skills, integrator, internet researcher, technology innovator,
etc.
I also teach in a graduate program for librarians and I ask my class on
management the first day, "How many of you are here because you love
reading and kids?" Most of the hands go up (I think they expect me to
want them to). I then say "I hope there is a lot more to you as a
professional than those two loves." From this we go into a discussion
of what makes a good library media specialist today....those are
important (especially the love of kids), but those in themselves do not
make a successful lms...
I could go on and on, but I think you get my point!
Have a great day. It's spring break and my husband and I are off to
the Washington state tulip festival and to the islands in Puget Sound
where I will spend some time READING!
                :-)
