Like Alice, I too have students who seem to be using the computers
as a way of avoiding doing any actual work. I LOVE the idea of
grading the students on their research behavior! We are instituting
a "scholarly behavior grade" for each research project we do with
our Middle School classes.

Scholarly Behaviors:

Be independent. (We give EXTENSIVE guidelines, modelling, graphic
organizers, pre-selected books and electronic sources; we expect
students, however, to independently use the table of contents,
index, bookmarks, etc.)

Use appropriate resources (No endless "searching" on the computer.)

Keep your own materials organized (we provide an envelope for each
student with index cards, rubber bands, assignment sheet, and
bibliography template--they have to keep their own materials together,
pick up and put things away at the end of the class)

Read. (Sooner or later, they all have to do this. No way around it.)

Be courteous when asking to share materials; be generous if someone
asks you to share what you have.

Non-Scholarly Behaviors:

"Am I done yet?"

"I'm done!"

"Do I HAVE to?"

"Is this enough?"

"I can't find anything on..." (We pre-research EVERY topic that
we assign--we are CRAZED about this--we KNOW there is enough
on every topic BEFORE we assign anything!)

Copying entire sentences word-for-word

Including words in your notes that you don't understand

Goofing off

----We go over this list at the beginning of every assignment.
