This is a really good question. I'm very interested to know what others think about this issue. I teach in a K-8 school and I often have Middle School students who LOVVVVVE to search the CD ROMs and websites, but resist using books despite the fact that many of them offer information that is of better quality, easier to find, and easier to read and use than what we have available in electronic format. I'm reluctant to ban them from the electronic formats, however, because I think that they benefit from seeing for themselves what they find (or don't find) online. On the other hand, I can't stand seeing a student spend their entire time in the library just hunting for information-- I want them actually THINKING and READING!!! So, I have sometimes set a time limit (15 minutes) on how much time they can spend on the computer if I am fairly sure that I have the information in book form readily available. I'm curious to know how other people are handling this situation.
