Colleagues, I debated a long time before jumping into the fray on this one. At the public library where I work we are going to a software called "Screen Door". With it we will select specific sites that will be on certain computers in the network. This will allow us to have certain computers in the reference area with ONLY the databases(OCLC FirstSearch and IAC Reference Center Gold-paid for by our state library by the way and provided for all Michigan Libraries); computers in the Heritage Room with only genealogy sources; computers in the Children's Room with only preselected "safe" websites. The computer on the reference desk and the two public access terminals that people sign User Agreements to use will not have screened sites. This was seen as a compromise and will limit allow people to use the free databases without having to constantly get people off the "Internet". It will also be less supervision to make sure they are only using specified computers for the uses intended. I have not seen it in operation yet and have not done a web search on "Screen Door" to check it out. Has anyone else ever heard of this software? I know it would not be practical for many school settings where we are trying to teach kids how to effectively search.
