I forgot one other thing -- The other day when one class of fifth-graders was in, one of my very favorite boys -- Jacob -- very quiet, loves to read and seems comfortable with himself -- was checking out his books when the kids behind him made the comment that, "Jacob reads too much." "He got over 100 points in AR last semester." and "Yeah, he wants to read instead of...." "and all the other things that he could be doing besides reading were mentioned. Well, I was kind of that way growing up -- there's nothing wrong with it. Do they tell kids that play sports that? I don't think so. Well, I asked Jacob, "Are you about the best speller in your class?" He said yes. "Are you good at grammer?" "Yes." I asked, "Do you lots of times know facts about things the teacher's talking about that no one else knows?" He said yes, kind of pumping out his chest. And I said to the kids in line, "You know, Jacob gets a lot of that from reading." I hope it made them think a little about the value of reading and especially that everyone in the world has different tastes and that it's okay to love reading passionately.
