I share your distress when the students also ask me to turn out the lights when a video is being shown. For the teachers, I would guess that is might be a throw-back to the days when films needed a darkened room, but the students are generally too young to remember that. Some rooms have a glare problem when the lights are left on during a video, but if things are correctly arranged, there should be no need for a darkened room. If that is the case, you might just need to assert yourself as the professional in charge of the media center and insist that the lights be left on for those students who need to do other work since the lights will not disturb the video watchers. Just as you would not insist on environmental control in someone else’s classroom, they have no such rights in your library. It may be hard to insist, but you really need to speak up for the students who need light. I think the teachers are showing you an unacceptable lack of respect. -- -- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Gail Smith, Cybr@rian Edison Regional Gifted Center, Chicago gsmith@edison.cps.k12.il.us or gails@flash.net =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= To quit LM_NET (or set NOMAIL or DIGEST), Send an email message to listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write EITHER: 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST * NOTE: Please allow time for confirmation from Listserv.
