I received this note from LGR, Teacher/Librarian in Minnesota. She reminded me of the several biography series' published by Lerner and Carolrhoda. I have a only a few of these titles, so I wasn't sure how well received they are. Here is her comment. From LGR: I appreciated your thoughtful discussion of biographies. I have been very happy with the Lerner and Carolrhoda series for beginning and intermediate grades. They do circulate at our school and the teachers find some of those for the younger grades good titles to use to introduce "biography" and also subject areas. Many of the subjects are familiar and there are enough new names to be current. Another comment from me. About three years ago when I weeded heavily in biography, I got rid of all the Signature series and all the Messner biographies. My recollection is that they were unread mostly because they were too wordy for this generation of readers. The paragraphs and chapters were too long for Gr. 4-5. I wonder if I should have considered bumping them up to the middle school library? Any opinions out there?
