I will attempt to compile this hit from responses received
without citing the responder - please bear with me, as I
learn to do this ;)

Ellen,
I use FP98 for my web site without any - and I do mean any -
HTML experience ...

Developing a web site is as easy as putting together a Power
Point presentation. Publishing the site is a point and click
operation - no need to use the ftp functions and selecting
files to transfer and erase - when pages are deleted from
your
original file on your computer and you update the web site,
the program will ask you if you want to delete the pages
from your host site as well ... it is very good and simple
to use ...

Want to see a sample of what it can do, stop by the web site
below and take a look for yourself. . .and like I said
above,
all without a single command in HTML...
************************************************************

Windows or Mac OS? If Mac, NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING is
simpler, cheaper ($39.00
for education as opposed to $400+ for Pagemill), or better
than Myrmidon
(http://www.terrymorse.com). If Windows, neither will make
you completely happy;
what's 'best' is a matter of personal preference.
************************************************************

I understand that Frontpage is designed to work directly on
the server.
Most of us have to design our pages separately and then
upload it to the
server.
************************************************************

Write to Adobe and see if they're willing to match the MS
offer! I've
learned PageMill but FrontPage gets good ratings too. I
would think you'd
have to do a side-by-side comparison of features to see
which one you
really want.

************************************************************

I just used Frontpage for the first time and was quite
dissatisfied with
it. The main reason? It ties you to Microsoft products
(Microsoft is
good at doing that). You see, your server has to post the
Frontpage
extensions, which must be purchased and put on the server by
your
internet provider. Also, I noticed that my page didn't look
"right" in
my viewer, Netscape Navigator. On a whim, I decided to try
it on
Explorer. Perfection. Just the "look" I was intending to
produce.
Interesting? The exact same, supposedly standard html code
looked
different (and not quite right) with a non-Microsoft
browser. That was
upsetting. If you're interested in checking that out, try
our web site
in both browsers. It's precisionservice.com.

Also, there are some things we (my husband and I) could not
do, one of
them as seemingly simple as inserting a blank line between
two existing
tables! We had to alter the html code to do that. On that
issue, we
consulted a friend who is proficient in Frontpage; he
couldn't figure it
out either and said he had had the same problem.

Neither my husband (who is a computer consultant) nor I
would recommend
Frontpage. I respect you for questioning this "gift" from
Microsoft.
************************************************************

I just recently put up a Web Page for my High School
library. I used
Front Page and I love it! It is easy and looks very
professional. You can
theme your pages automatically so everything looks
coordinated and with
virtually no effort! I highly recommend it and think
you'll like it
************************************************************

Ellen
We have had all kinds of trouble getting set up & going with
Frontpage. We have a Novell network, which has caused some
difficulties. Their phone support has been fruitless. Maybe
others
have had better luck. Have not tried Adobe Pagemill.

At home I have Word 97 which (for me) has been a snap to
use. Not
much more difficult than creating a document.
************************************************************
.
I've "evaluated" both products... I'm an old stick in the
mud, still using
a Unix text editor (vi) to do my web pages, but I liked what
I saw of
FrontPage better... added to that is the fact that I've seen
more third
party support for FrontPage, in terms of web hosts
supporting FrontPage
extensions and educational material from other vendors.
************************************************************

My son, college frosh computer major, uses & highly
recomends Front Page. He designed a web page for a local
company using this program
too.
************************************************************

Pagemill is great but the latest version of Front Page is as
good or
better. You'll be happy with either. Both are very
intuitive.

************************************************************

thanks to all who responded! We'll probably try to get demos
of both products at this point, since the results seem
mixed!
