Tech: private chatrooms

Hello Friends!
        I am one of those fortunate (?) souls who is sending off the first-born to
college this year :(  !!  Although I'm sure we will email often, I'm
wondering how we could get a private chatroom to talk occasionally (for
free!)  I have been on the LM_NET chat a few times, and have the mIrc
installed on my machine.  Will this work? If so, how do you get to a
private chat?  We will need to download the mIrc client to his machine.
Thanks for any suggestions!
