rom: jscott <jscott@CYBERTRAILS.COM> > Subject: TIME ALLOTMENT go (adding your own headings)? Hi, I'm an elementary school librarian. I would like to survey other elementary librarians for information on how much time is spent teaching library skills versus flex time versus time to shelve books and other library jobs. Do you have each class each week for a set amount of time to teach library skills and also to checkout books to them? Is the classroom teacher present during your Skills time? During your checkout time? How much time do you set aside each week for library duties other than working directly with students? - shelving, ordering, checking new books in etc.? Any answers you can give me on your time allocation would be greatly appreciated. Send answers to me at ghirst@mail.win.org. I'm a librarian in Gibson School which is part of the Riverview Gardens School District in St. Louis MO. THANKS! That would enable you to enter, for example, "scary stories" once with the note to see horror, ghost stories, and whatever other more conventional headings you usually use. That will satisfy your desire for kids to both find things from their own vocabulary and also learn the conventional headings -- no one will deliberately use "scary stories" when he knows it will just lead him to the conventional headings rather than an actual book -- but it will be there for those who need help to think of the conventional vocabulary. I excerpted this summary from from the June 1998 issue of Current Cites. If you are not familiar with Current Cites check out their web page at: http://sunsite.Berkeley.EDU/currentcites/ The Bibliography On-Demand is a great feature. ********************************************************************************************* Bales, Susan Nall. "Technology and Tradition: The Future's in the Balance" American Libraries 29(6)(June/July 1998): 82-86. Following up on their report Buildings, Books, and Bytes: Libraries and Communities in the Digital Age (see http://www.benton.org/Library/Kellogg/buildings.html), the Benton Foundation has conducted and analyzed six focus groups aimed at the issues identified in that report. Their findings will be released in a publication scheduled for release in July 1998 (watch Current Cites for news of its availability). Meanwhile, Bales shares some of their findings in this article. Among them are: 1) Libraries must be portrayed as high touch and high tech, and in that order, 2) Root all discussions of technology in books and reading, 3) Teach the public that the librarian is an information navigator, 4) Emphasize that the library you trust can help you make the transition to technology, 5) Recognize the powerful connections Americans make between libraries and effective parenting. Libraries are at a critical juncture between the past and the future. How well librarians meld the traditional with the technical and present themselves to the public will dictate the role of libraries in modern society for decades to come. My advice is to get the original Benton report, this article, the new report when it comes out, read them, and pay close attention. -- RT ------------------------------------- Name: Gail Szeliga E-mail: gszeliga@szeliga.stny.lrun.com (Gail Szeliga) Date: 8/3/98 Time: 7:21:29 AM This message was sent by Chameleon ------------------------------------- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= To quit LM_NET (or set NOMAIL or DIGEST), Send an email message to listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write EITHER: 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST * NOTE: Please allow time for confirmation from Listserv.
